The Who

This is the eighth of a series of articles on DC United’s newest team members, providing background and what could realistically be expected from them in 2024.

Welcome to DC United Matti Peltola

For a period in 2023, the Black & Red had all three designated player spots filled for the first time in a couple years. It changed when a repeated offense meant it was time for a certain player to move on. It was decided to hold off filling the open DP spot until the winter. This strategy seems to have worked out as the Black & Red have now filled this spot. With the newest acquisition Mackay has continued to revamp the Black & Red’s defense, as they signed Finland National Team player Matti Peltola. The twenty-one year old midfielder has signed as a Young Designated Player which also opens up two more U-22 Initiative spots, that could prove useful with future roster building.

Peltola was a free agent, so DC didn’t need to pay a transfer fee, though in a total MLS move, DC United acquired the discovery rights from Minnesota United for $50,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM). The Black & Red paid an additional $25,000 in 2024 GAM to Minnesota after the signing Peltola to a four-year contract through 2027 with an option in 2028. Because there was no transfer fee, Peltola in the future could be brought down to a TAM player, reopening the third DP spot if team needs dictate such a strategy.

The young Finnish player has the proficiency and versatility to play in both the midfield and defensive back line roles. With HJK Helsinki of the Finnish first division, Peltola often operated as a Center Back but he possesses the versatility to excel in various positions such as Fullback and has the demonstrated capabilities to be a central defensive midfielder. Head Coach Lesesne has stated he sees Peltola primarily as a defensive midfielder

Many reports suggest that Peltola has exceptional passing range and vision.  His vision and range of passing should enable him to distribute the ball accurately over various distances. This skill will be invaluable to the Black & Red in initiating attacks from deep positions or switching play efficiently.

The young Finn has tremendous speed, which will allow him to cover a lot of ground in the midfield, which combined with his defensive intuition should help DC control the field in front of the back line. Last season, the lack of speed hurt the Black & Red. Peltola’s speed will help change this. High end speed is one of Peltola’s standout attributes. Whether he is tracking back to defend or making surging runs forward, his agility and acceleration will be a huge benefit for DC. This pace allows him to tirelessly cover ground quickly and recover possession effectively.

As a defender, Peltola has exhibited excellent tackling skills. Reports suggest he times his challenges effectively and demonstrates a strong ability to dispossess opponents of the ball. Peltola’s positional sense and defensive awareness should contribute to his effectiveness in breaking down opposition attacks.

At 6’0, 154 lbs, Peltola might have to get stronger to handle the wear and tear of the MLS season. Yet Peltola’s adaptability and well-rounded set of skills make him an intriguing prospect to watch. He covers ground, possesses the required technical attributes to effectively contribute defensively, and has the passing skills and ball control to provide support in the offensive phases of a game. His adaptability and willingness to perform in different roles should make him a team MVP candidate. A lot of pundits have been lukewarm on the signing of Matti Peltola, but he has the talent and physical attributes to be a great addition to the Black & Red.
