The Curse is Broken! D.C. United 1-0 Philadelphia Union Match Review

What a way to kick off the 2026 MLS season! For those of us in the UK staying up until the early hours, that performance was exactly what the doctor ordered. D.C. United secured a massive 1-0 win over our bogey team, Philadelphia Union, breaking a scoring drought against them that stretched back to May 2024 and our winless streak of 5 years.

The atmosphere at Audi Field was electric, and the new-look 4-4-2 system under René Weiler looked refreshed and full of movement, a stark contrast from the hit to Benteke and hope style previously seen. Here is everything you need to know about our opening day victory:

The Breakthrough

The match’s only goal came in the 23rd minute through a beautiful counter-attack. After clearing a Philly corner, Jackson Hopkins found Gabrielle Pirani, who held the ball up brilliantly before João Peglow played a perfectly timed ball for the new DP, Tai Baribo. Baribo made no mistake on his debut, sliding a side-footed finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Match Statistics

Despite Philadelphia having more of the ball, D.C. looked far more dangerous on the break:

  • Final Score: D.C. United 1 – 0 Philadelphia Union
  • Possession: D.C. United 48% – 52% Philadelphia Union
  • Shots on Target: D.C. United 1 – 3 Philadelphia Union
  • Expected Goals (xG): D.C. United 0.91 – 0.41 Philadelphia Union
  • Fouls: A physical encounter with 35 total fouls (19 by D.C. United).

Player Highlights

Several new faces and returning stars put in a shift tonight:

  • Jackson Hopkins (8.0 rating): Absolute engine in the midfield, cutting inside and creating chaos for the Philly defense.
  • Keisuke Kurokawa (7.7 rating): A fantastic debut for the left-back, showing incredible pace and defensive awareness.
  • Tai Baribo (7.2 rating): The match-winner. He gave us everything until he was forced off with cramp late in the second half.
  • Sean Johnson: Earned the clean sheet with 4 vital saves, keeping us in control when Philly pressed late.
  • Debutants: Alongside Kurokawa, Baribo and Johnson, we had Hefti, Munteanu, Markovic & Nealis making their respective debuts too.

The Turning Point

The game took a wild turn in the 66th minute when Philadelphia’s Ezekiel Allidore was shown a straight red card for dissent. After a coming-together with Lucas Bartlett, Allidore clearly said something the referee couldn’t ignore. Bartlett even blew him a kiss as he walked off!

It wasn’t always pretty, and the second half got a bit scrappy, but a win and a clean sheet against Philly is a dream start to the year.
