D.C. United have officially announced the signing of exciting American midfielder Caden Clark from rivals CF Montréal, in a deal that signals clear intent from the club’s front office.
The Black-and-Red have splashed out an initial $700,000 to bring the 22-year-old to Audi Field, a fee that could rise by another $100,000 based on performance. It’s a significant move for a player who has already packed a wealth of experience into his young career. Clark arrives under the league’s U-22 Initiative, with a contract running through the 2025 season and club options for 2026 and 2027.
General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer, Ally Mackay, was clearly delighted with the club’s new acquisition. “Caden is a proven talent in this league who will strengthen our midfield,” Mackay stated. “At 22, he already has extensive MLS experience, and we’re looking forward to integrating him with the group.”
Who is the New Lad?
For fans wondering what to expect, Clark’s journey to the capital has been an eventful one. He’s a creative, attack-minded midfielder who isn’t afraid to have a pop at goal or pick out a killer pass.
- Breakthrough Star: Clark burst onto the MLS scene with New York Red Bulls, famously scoring a cracking goal on his debut against Atlanta United back in 2020. His form earned him a high-profile transfer to German giants RB Leipzig.
- European Adventure: While with Leipzig, he spent time on loan back at the Red Bulls, helping them reach the playoffs in two consecutive seasons, before a brief spell in Denmark with Vendsyssel FF.
- MLS Veteran at 22: He returned to the States with Minnesota United in early 2024 before being traded to CF Montréal that summer. It was in Montréal that he really hit his stride, becoming a key player and helping them secure a playoff spot last season with a brilliant run of form that saw him bag four goals and two assists in the final nine matches.
- International Pedigree: Clark has been capped at senior level for the United States, making a dream start by grabbing an assist on his debut against Venezuela and scoring his first international goal just five days later against Costa Rica earlier this year.
What He Brings to Audi Field
This season for Montréal, Clark has been a consistent presence, making 31 appearances across all competitions and providing five assists. He’s a player who looks to get on the ball and make things happen in the final third. His stats show a midfielder who is tidy in possession, willing to take players on, and contributes defensively with a decent number of tackles.
The move represents a tidy bit of business for D.C. United. They’ve secured a player with high potential, international experience, and who is already well-acclimatised to the unique demands of Major League Soccer. His energy and creativity from the middle of the park could be just the spark the Black-and-Red need as they push forward.
Welcome to D.C., Caden!
