A pivotal change has swept through the corridors of Audi Field. D.C. United announced today (July 10, 2025), that the club has parted ways with Head Coach Troy Lesesne, effective immediately. Assistant Coach Zach Prince will also be departing the club. In a move to steer the team through this transition, the Black-and-Red have promoted Academy Director Kevin Flanagan to interim head coach as the search for a new permanent leader begins.
The news comes on the heels of a string of disappointing results of 5 games without a win have left the D.C. United faithful yearning for a return to the club’s glory days. The passion of the fans, a constant and vibrant force in the stands, has been met with frustration on the pitch and the Front Office. The promise that arrived with Lesesne, who joined the club in January 2024 after a successful interim spell with the New York Red Bulls, has unfortunately not translated into the consistent success the supporters crave.
In an official statement released by the club, D.C. United General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer, Ally Mackay, addressed the decision: “We want to thank Troy for his dedication over the last two seasons. After internal discussions, we have decided to part ways with Troy and go in a different direction as a club. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately, with a focus on identifying a leader who aligns with our club’s identity and long-term vision. This is a pivotal moment for D.C. United, and we are committed to making the right decision for the future of our team. In the meantime, I have full confidence in Kevin Flanagan to lead the group. I’ve worked closely with Kevin for many years, and we will give him all the support he needs as we move through this transition.”
Lesesne’s tenure with D.C. United saw the team compile a 14-24-17 record in the MLS Regular Season. The hope that his impressive 14-10-8 record with the Red Bulls would be a sign of things to come for the Black-and-Red did not fully materialize, leaving the team currently sitting in the lower echelons of the Eastern Conference, an all too familiar feeling for the Black and Red faithful.
For the passionate supporters who fill the stands week in and week out, this change, while abrupt, signals a potential turning point. The unwavering loyalty of the fans is the heartbeat of D.C. United, and their desire for a team that mirrors their passion is palpable. This decision by the front office, for some is a clear indication that mediocrity is not the standard for a club with a rich history of success, however, for the die-hards, this is just lip service.
The appointment of Kevin Flanagan as interim head coach brings a familiar face to the helm. Flanagan, who was appointed as the Director of Academy and Player Development on February 3, 2025, boasts over two decades of coaching and leadership experience. His deep understanding of the club’s emerging talent and his possession of a USSF “A” License, Academy Director License, and Talent Scout License, will be invaluable as the team navigates the remainder of the season.
The search for a new head coach will be watched with keen interest by the entire D.C. United community. The hope is for a leader who can not only deliver results but also reignite the fire and identity of this historic MLS club. For the fans, this is a moment of cautious optimism, a hope that this change will be the catalyst for a new era of success for the Black-and-Red, but also the calls of a new owner will grow louder and louder if results do not improve.
