Transfer News: Lewis O’Brien joins on loan

D.C. United have signed Notts Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien on loan until July 16th. He is currently ineligible to play until he receives his Visa, which could be a week or two away yet. The loan deal also includes an option to buy, which is huge news. For me this loan deal is an absolute win win situation. If he does well, we get some good games from him, if he doesn’t do so well, well it’s a loan deal and we won’t have wasted so much on him. I like this deal a lot, he’s a solid player who could be a great signing for us.

“Lewis has been one of the best players in the Championship over the last few seasons. He reads the game well and creates goal scoring opportunities. Bringing him in on loan from Nottingham Forest was a great bit of business for us and he will be a brilliant addition to our midfield.”

Wayne Rooney, D.C. United Head Coach

“We were excited about the prospect of Lewis joining us on loan because he has an impressive pedigree in England in both the Championship and EPL. We look forward to getting Lewis in with the group.”

Dave Kasper, D.C. United President of Soccer Operations

If you didn’t know, he has had a tough period with Forest after being left out of the squad once the winter transfer window had closed. He was due to join Blackburn Rovers on loan but that deal fell through at the last minute. Their loss is our gain as Lewis had made 13 EPL appearances, scoring a single goal.

Lewis O’Brien started his career at Huddersfield Town, but made his pro debut at Bradford City in 2018. He wen’t on to be a crucial part of Huddersfield’s run in the 2022 English Championship season, guiding them to a playoff final. He has scored eight goals and made 10 assists in 131 appearances for the club.
