D.C. United have officially confirmed the signing of forward Tai Baribo from Philadelphia Union. The 27-year-old joins on a 5-year Designated Player contract.
“We are very pleased to bring in a top player like Tai to bolster our roster heading into the 2026 MLS season. Tai is a clinical finisher and a proven goal scorer in the league, who will give us an edge in the final third. Beyond goals, he understands how to create space and is deadly in the air, making him a perfect fit for the identity we are building at the club. We are thrilled to welcome him to the nation’s capital.”

The D.C. U.K. View: Mind the Gap
On paper, it’s a solid bit of business. Taking a double-digit goalscorer from a rival team is never a bad thing, but we need to temper the expectations. Baribo is the first of potentially three DPs to be named for the 2026 season, but he is a striker who relies heavily on service.
Dr. Sogut was quick to mention Baribo’s aerial prowess, yet following the club’s recent roster decisions to move on from “wide” options, United’s current squad is drastically lacking in width. Unless the front office finds some genuine wingers in this window, Baribo could find himself as isolated as those who came before him. It’s a good signing, but it’s only half the job done.
