Recap:

There’s an old saying in soccer, sometimes a draw feels like a victory, other times it feels like a loss; in the case of DC United taking on the Portland Timbers, the Black & Red definitely felt victorious in their draw.

The evening started on an off note when Player of the Week Christian Benteke was a late game scratch. United’s Striker was held out after picking up a muscle strain during pregame warm-ups.

In a game that matched the two teams that had the most impressive wins in their opening games, Portland Timbers vs DC United was one of the marquee matchups of the night. Both teams have new coaches and are at the beginning of a reboot, and both wanted to prove that the first week’s match was not a fluke.

At the end of the game it’s safe to say that both teams have a lot to be happy about, but also concerns that need to be addressed if they want to be competitive at the end of the season.

First Half:

A key to the game was could somebody other than Benteke score, and the importance of this question came into stark relief even before kickoff when it was reported that Christian Benteke would not be playing. Suddenly the question of who could step up and score for the Black & Red was of the utmost importance if they were to get any type of result at Providence Park.

As in the first week United came out pressing high, attempting to turn the ball over and quickly transition to offense. They had some success, but Portland’s counter press meant that a lot of the opening minutes were a ping pong match of the ball going back and forth between the two teams and neither really getting a hold of the game. The first 15 minutes of the game was what is quickly becoming a hallmark of Troy Lesesne’s DC United matches, frenetic.

In that time though there were two troubling trends that would concern the Black & Red. The first was that when United did have the ball, they could not seem to create real scoring opportunities. The second was that they seemed vulnerable to the Timber’s speed in their counter attack.

It was this second concern that came to bite United in the 18th minute. Santiago Moreno, not for the first time, made a quick spin move that turned Pedro Santos around, and led a direct counter attack against United’s defense. He dribbled from the midfield all the way into the right side of DC’s penalty box. Driving towards the end line, Moreno cut the ball back to Dairon Asprilla who had positioned himself near the penalty spot. Asprilla’s first-time shot was perfect and the Timber’s Nation were revving the chainsaw to celebrate his goal.

From there the match returned to what the opening minutes had been. The Black & Red definitely answered the question of if they could match the intensity of the first week’s game. United’s press was well organized, and did well to disrupt Portland’s offense. Yet the team still could not manage to develop any consistent offensive threat.

United’s best chance to tie the game happened in the 31st minute when Cristian Dajome, who replaced Benteke in the starting lineup, placed a header from the edge of the six-yard box that Timber’s goalkeeper Crepeau deflected over the crossbar.

Ted Ku-DiPietro also played a dangerous ball across the goalmouth, but there weren’t any United players making the run to finish the opportunity.

The first half would end with the question of who else on DC United can score left unanswered.

Second Half:

There were no changes to the lineup at the beginning of the second half for either side. The Black & Red started on the front foot, but the Timbers seemed quite content to sit back, absorb United’s pressure and then strike on fast counter attacks.

United continued to play with a high energy full press, but it was less chaotic than in the first half.

United players were doing a better job to shut down passing lanes, and win loose balls. Another change was the attack stopped being so reliant on aerial crosses. An attack that makes an aerial pass to 6’3 Christian Benteke is always going to be head and shoulders above than one that makes an aerial pass to 5’8 Cristian Dajome. (Pun intended)

United started to use more quick passes to their feet and direct dribble at the defense to create offense, with more opportunities created. The lack of a proven goalscorer though, and great goal keeping by Portland’s Maxime Crepeau, meant that the Black & Red continued to trail.

Dajome was able to put another good shot on goal to get the tie in the 51st minute when he placed a shot from the edge of the box past a diving Crepeau. Unfortunately it ricocheted off the far left post. Ted Ku-DiPietro crashed the goal, and managed to get a leg on the ball, but it was at a weird height and he was unable to get his leg over the ball and it went high over the goal.

This near miss seemed to galvanize KDP, who became a Tasmanian Devil in the center of the field. Both offensively and defensively, Ted KDP was making himself be noticed. Unfortunately, despite creating a couple of real chances, it was not the Black & Red who scored next. In the 61st minute, Portland’s Left Back, Eric Miller, crossed an aerial ball into DC’s penalty box from the left side of the field. The ball landed in an empty space in front of Portland Winger, Santiago Moreno, who finished the play with a confident shot past an onrushing Alex Bono and into the lower right-corner of the goal.

It looked dire for United at this point, but to their credit the players didn’t hang their heads, and continued to play the new system. Besides Ted KDP, Mateusz Klich, Matti Peltola, and Aaron Herrera all stood out as continuing to play inspired soccer. In addition, Pedro Santos, who had a rough first half, showed grit and determination and raised his game.

United’s relentless effort earned the team a free kick in a dangerous area. Klich’s pass into the box went off a Portland defender’s arm as he tried to signal for an offside. Both the offside and the handball were reviewed, and it was determined that there wasn’t offsides and yes there was a handball. Mateusz Klich easily converted the penalty kick, and at the 72nd minute United had a bit of hope.

Head Coach Troy Lesesne decided to make a change at this point, bringing in fresh legs for the offense, with Kristian Fletcher coming in for Gabriel Pirani and Jackson Hopkins coming in for Jared Stroud. Both Hopkins and Fletcher provided energy and attacking intent.

United’s attack became relentless, and it looked like United was going to get the tying goal when KDP received a quick pass, drove towards the goal, and passed to Fletcher in front of the goalmouth, but Crepeau somehow came back to swallow Fletcher’s shot. The offside flag came up, so it would not have counted, but it set the precedent that Crepeau was going to make United work for any additional goals. Minutes later Ted KDP received another pass, just inside the penalty box, and he quickly placed a solid shot inside the near post. Unfortunately for him,  Crepeau again made another of his amazing saves, and the Black & Red were again left down one.

Still United continued to press, and it was obvious that Portland was hanging on. Head Coach Phil Neville even shifted to a back three, but it wasn’t enough as Pedro Santos made a perfect diagonal cross field pass to a wide open Jackson Hopkins. Hopkins controlled the ball and dribbled towards the goal before making a perfect lead pass to Aaron Herrera who made an overrun towards the end line. As Hopkins continued his run, the defenders were pulled out of position and Herrera was able to place a perfect cross to a wide open Kristian Fletcher, who buried his shot into the goal.

And just like that it was a tie.

Both sides would create different chances over the last few minutes of the game, but neither side was able to really create a really dangerous opportunity. The game would end in a draw, tied 2-2.

Dropped points, but still a performance United can build upon.

Fun Facts

  • The Black & Red are  now 4-4-3 against the Portland Timbers all-time in regular season matchups.
  • United are 2-3-2 against the Timbers on the road all-time in regular season matchups.
  • Newly acquired Defensive Midfielder Matti Peltola had 100% tackle accuracy for the second straight game
  • Aaron Herrera has an assist in two straight matches
  • Forward Kristian Fletcher scored his first goal since the final game of the 2022 season.
  • Mateusz Klich scored his first goal of the season and his third of the last four games.

Words from the Head Coach:

“Yeah, I’m really proud of this performance. It’s a point.”

“I have a feeling we could have got all three points.”

“The way that we were able to stay together, this is the type of—when you talk about values, when you talk about principles, when you talk about building something together and getting the right energy and spirit within the club. Ultimately when you see a performance like this tonight, that was on full display.”

“And I think a big deal for us is how we’re going about this, and tonight I think we showed a lot of what we have been working on the last six to seven weeks.”

“He [Benteke] is day-to-day. He felt tightness during warmups, and the decision was made to lean on the side of caution.”

Observations From my couch:

  • Ugh! No Benteke!

  • Santos is playing better this half.
  • The super sub kids have brought energy.
  • Damn! Ted KDP had a beautiful shot off a perfect pass from Aaron Herrera but it was saved by Crepeau, who is standing on his head.
  • Ugh! Kristian Fletcher looked to tie the match off of a perfect pass from Ted KDP, but Crepeau made an amazing save in the center of the goal.
  • Would have been offside.
  • Have to credit Santos on that diagonal pass to Hopkins.
  • Goal!
  • Kristian Fletcher buries his shot from up close off Aaron Herrera cross.
  • Aaron Herrera is on the ground, but it looks like cramps.
  • Nervous as Kamal Miller puts a header towards goal off of a corner kick, but it sails high and wide to the right.
  • Match ends with Portland Timbers 2 and DC United 2
  • Pretty pleased all things considered.

The Managers:

Portland Timbers – Phil Neville –  For the second week, DC will face a team with a new Head Coach, and like the  Revolution went with a MLS veteran in Phil Neville. The Timbers seem to be in a similar situation as DC United, in that they are in the midst of a rebuild. From his time with Inter Miami we know that Neville will look to build a solid defense and hit teams on the counter attack.

Last week’s win should help quiet some Timbers fans’ minds as Neville’s appointment was met with wide-scale skepticism, largely down to his poor start with Inter Miami, in which they lost 10 of the first 15 matches of the 2023 season.

In his tactics, expect the Timbers to set up in the classic 4-2-3-1 so it can best utilize Evander’s talent as a playmaker and the speed of his wingers. Neville likes for his offense to move the ball quickly, and deliberately in the attack. Look for very direct attacks, off of solid defense.

DC United – Troy Lesesne – The New DC United Head Coach makes his debut on the sidelines after serving a one game ban for picking up two yellow cards in the playoff match versus FC Cincinnati when he was the interim Head Coach of the New York Red Bulls last season. A young energetic Head Coach who helped to establish and led New Mexico United in the USL Championship. Between his time with Red Bulls and New Mexico United, Lesesne has used tactical ideas that are similar to Jim Curtin in Philadelphia and Pat Noonan in Cincinnati.

Summary:

Two teams that had impressive wins in their opening games, face off against each other in the second weekend, when DC United visit Providence Park and take on the Portland Timbers. The Timbers defeated the Colorado Rapids 4-1 in their home opener, while the Black and Red beat the New England Revolution 3-1.

The two teams are in similar situations as they look to turn around their fortunes. Where DC United has not made the playoffs for four straight seasons, the Portland Timbers failed to make it into the playoffs for two straight seasons.

In their opening game, Portland had a near perfect first half, and they headed into the half-time break leading 4-0. The Rapids were able to pull one back in the second half, but it proved to only be a consolation goal as the game ended 4-1.

For DC, this will the first of a two-game road trip, and an opportunity to prove they deserved the first week win. For many commentators, the fact that New England went down a man, negated the fact that DC had dominated the Revolution even before the second booking. Nor did National pundits seem to recognize that DC scored three against a team that was basically bunkering for much of the rest of the game.

Keys to the Match:

Can DC play with the same intensity?

The intensity with which the Black & Red’s new starting eleven came out with, caught everyone, the Revs, the commentators, the fans in the stadium and watching on TV, off guard. The team played with a high energy full press that hasn’t been seen since the early Hernan Losada days. That said, this press didn’t seem as frenetic, and the organization of the press meant individual players didn’t need to run all over. Instead there were quick sprints that players would make to shut down passing lanes, and win loose balls. Throughout the game, DC players just seemed to be faster than the Revolution players.

For DC United to be successful in Portland, the team needs to come out with the same type of energy. Timber Nation will be loud, and after last week’s victory, enthusiastic. DC will need to weather their energy and get control of the game. The Timbers took it to the Rapids, but had chances. If Colorado had taken their chances, the game might have ended differently. DC can’t let their chances go by in vain.

Expect DC to not be as energetic on the road as they were last week, but be more so than last season.

Who will play Left Back?

Last week, prior to the official lineup being released, Mohanad Jeahze was expected to start. There was hope that fans would finally see the player they were promised when Jeahze was made one of the highest paid Left Backs in MLS. This was a player that Celtic FC were considering making a bid on. It was therefore a bit surprising that not only was Jeahze not in the starting lineup, he wasn’t on the bench. That Jeahze didn’t show up on the injury report, questions were raised to which United deferred. Rumors have since surfaced that Mohanad Jeahze wants to return to Europe, and DC is shopping him.

To that end, it’s unknown who will start for DC United at Left Back. There is a small chance Mohanad Jeahze gets a start, but it’s a small chance. Pedro Santos got the start last week against New England, and while he was okay in the first half, he had the assist on Benteke’s first goal, his defensive limitations were easily seen in the second half. Newly acquired Conner Antley looked decent coming off the bench, he too had an assist. Antley is younger and faster, with better defensive skills, but he’s not a natural left sided player.

Other options include Cristian Dájome, who played as a Left Wingback when with the Vancouver Whitecaps. He was not that great though, as his defense was suspect. Christopher McVey and Matai Akinmboni also could be used as Left Backs. They would not be ideal choices, but could provide United with a more defensive option. This could be a good chance for Akinmboni to get more needed playing time.

Most likely Conner Antley will get his first start with DC United.

Who besides Benteke will score?

Christian Benteke led DC United with 14 goals last season, as the offense went through him. Whether Benteke scored or not often dictated if United would win. In this season’s opener Benteke continued this trend when he scored a hat trick to help DC get the easy win. Other United players had opportunities, but couldn’t put the ball in the net. Jared Stroud had the best opportunity, with Ted Ku-DiPietro a close second. Both players showed a propensity to put themselves in position to score, but botched the final delivery. If both can make their shots, they will help ease the pressure on Benteke. In this marathon of a season, it will be necessary for the Black & Red to have alternative scoring options on the pitch so opponents are punished if they focus too much on Christian Benteke.

Does Evander play?

One of the more impressive aspects of Portland’s 4-1 drubbing of the Colorado Rapids is that it was done without their star Designated Player, Evander. He was expected to play, but was forced to leave during warm-ups with a right calf injury and never returned in a precautionary move. Newly acquired Winger Antony softened the blow, putting in two goals, and making the cross that led to an own goal.

Yet there was a reason that the Timbers made Evander their club-record signing last offseason, and though he got off to a shaky start, the Brazilian demonstrated he could be the DP the Timbers needed in 2023. He led Portland with nine goals and added four assists. More importantly he grew stronger over the course of the MLS season.

If Portland were to have both Evander and Antony on the field Saturday night, United’s defense will surely be tested.

Things to Watch:

Offense – The Black and Red’s offense will continue to go through striker Christian Benteke. In week one he showed he will again provide scoring. It was obvious in the opening game that part of the tactics that were employed was to put the ball in the air for Benteke to put his head on. It obviously worked against the Revolution, but might not be as effective against the Portland backline which added one of the best MLS Center Backs in Kamal Miller.

If aerial crosses prove to be not as effective, it will be important for DC to move the ball quickly with short accurate passes. This is where Ted Ku-DiPietro showed his best position is playing as a false nine, just off Benteke. The two demonstrated a strong partnership in moving off the other without the ball, and getting into dangerous positions. If either had been able to get a one-touch shot off, they might have had additional goals against the Revs. The ability of the two to play through congestion in the opponent’s penalty box will be a key to United’s offense.

With Benteke and Ted KDP playing the focal point of the attack, Gabriel Pirani and Jared Stroud will play a constantly moving off the ball attack. Technically Pirani was the ten, and was playing just under the two forwards, but during attacking play you were just as likely to see him on the wings, especially the left, picking up the ball and dribbling at the defense. On the other side, Stroud was the Right Wing, yet he seemed more often than not to be attacking up the middle and ceding the wide right to Aaron Herrera, who demonstrated his ability to cross the ball. Their movement along with that of Mateusz Klich allowed DC to create overloads on offense that could be exploited with better finishing.

Off the bench in the game against the Revs was notable teenager Kristen Fletcher. It was a shaky debut, but still showed his athletic potential. He needs to let the game come to him, and not try to force things. He has all the ability in the world as long as he plays in the system and with his teammates. Also off the bench were Cristian Dájome and Jackson Hopkins. Dájome was a bit of a surprise, but he demonstrated the speed that surely played a factor in his role. He did earn a direct free kick in a dangerous area that Klich made a strong go for. Hopkins again showed he has versatility to play outside and in which will prove useful in Head Coach Lesesne’s tactics.

Additional players off the bench will be Martín Rodríguez who we have not seen in over a year. In his early games for United he showed he could bring some offensive punch, especially the long cross that United seem to want to employ. The biggest mystery United has at the moment is Pedro Santos. Will Santos continue to start at the Left Back spot in place of Mohanad Jeahze. Santos showed on the opening United goal that he has the ability to play the ball into the box, but he also showed the 35 year old doesn’t have the legs for 90 minutes of playing as a Wingback. Both he and the team would be better served with him coming off the bench.

With Jared Stroud and Pirani starting and Rodríguez and Santos coming off the bench, expect the Black & Red to continue to cross the ball often into the box, and challenge Benteke to put the ball on goal.

Defense – We now know a bit more about DC United’s completely new defense, and the first showing was excellent. Alex Bono got the nod in goal, and again showed he can be one of the better Goalkeepers in the league. His one goal conceded was a Goal of the Season candidate that no Goalie in MLS was going to save, maybe even the world. Bono continued to show calm and resolve making a number of impressive saves and a willingness to be vocal and control his penalty box. Considering he was playing behind a completely new backline, it was an excellent showing.

The new Center Backs showed well, Lucas Bartlett, and Christopher McVey both played well off each other, both before and after the second yellow card. They both handled the pace of New England’s Esmir Bajraktarevic and Tomas Chancalay, not allowing either to feel comfortable on the ball. Bartlett and McVey both demonstrated more pace than last season’s backline, and the ability to move forward in support of the press. There was a noticeable intent by the defenders to move the ball upfield more frequently through long passes, and both Bartlett and McVey showed quite capable of breaking lines with their passing.

With Mohanad Jeahze’s status up in the air, there is a chance that McVey is moved into the Left Back spot. He has all the tools to be a good defender there, and has the passing ability to play long passes into the box. It might be more a question does Head Coach Lesesne trust Matai Akinmboni as the starting Center Back in the very hostile environment of Providence Park.

Another option is starting Conner Antley, who in his limited minutes showed he at least had the skills and athleticism to be on the field. A more natural Right Back, Antley would be a little out of position, but his history suggests he would play with a tenacity that is needed.

On the other side of the pitch there is no question about who will be starting. Aaron Herrera showed why he had been considered one of the best young defenders in MLS. He showed that tenacious edge a defender needs to make opponents uncomfortable, was consistently in the right spot to intercept passes and break up play, and was a big reason United was able to transition the ball forward off of turnovers quickly into potential scoring opportunities.

All of the newly acquired defenders acquitted themselves quite well in the first game. This was especially true for new Central Defensive Midfielder Matti Peltola who was the biggest mystery going into the game. With every preview of DC United there was the obligatory reference that Peltola had only ever played in Finland, yet the young DP showed he deserved to be on the field. He demonstrated great awareness of where to be on the pitch to intercept a number of passes, and remarkable speed to close down opponents. He on a number of occasions flustered Charles Gil, and was a big reason New England found little joy up the middle. Peltola also demonstrated his pinpoint accuracy in his passing. Where Peltola will need to improve is he sometimes wanted to wait for a ball, or didn’t move it quickly enough. These things will come as he gets acclimated to MLS and playing with Mateusz Klich.

As expected, Head Coach Troy Lesesne’s team utilized a pressing defense, and it was more similar to that which is utilized in Cincinnati and Philadelphia rather than what he used with the Energy Drink team. It was quite effective in its debut, but there are undoubtedly going to be some growing pains. On the road in a different time zone, facing the Timber Nation in Providence Park could be a serious test of the new system.

By the Numbers:

Portland key players
  • Anthony has 2 goals
  • Eryk Williams has 1 goal and an assist
  • Juan Mosquera has an ay
  • Christian Paredes has one assist.
DC United key players
  • Christian Benteke has 3 goals
  • Pedro Santos has an assist,
  • Connor Antley has an assist.
  • Aaron Herrera has an assist

Predictions:

Richard – 1-1 draw. It will be difficult for DC United to keep a clean sheet in Portland. The Timbers showed they were quite capable of scoring last week. At the same time Benteke should the Black & Red are also capable of scoring. In the end I believe both teams pick up a point.

James – 2-0 win. I think it’s a bit of an unknown again. With a new head coach in Portland with Phil Neville and this being Troy Lesesne’s 1st match in charge on the sideline, adding to that this is also our 1st game vs the Timbers since Sep’ 2019, it just makes it a complete guess. Heart over head again

Thoughts

Firstly, it’s great to see DC getting back to back wins, and even better that it’s been on the road. No goals conceded too, it certainly feels like it has been a while, in fact, the last time DC got back to back wins was back in May, and they were at home for those, and the last back to back clean sheets was also in May too. In this league it’s all about form at the right time, and DC right now are building that form. We’ve got 3 important “Cup Finals” coming up, and with one more win, we have bagged ourselves a playoff place, but we want to have that home game so we need to do all we can to get that spot. Seattle at home, followed by a trip to Red Smell Arena and a final game at home to FC Cincinnati.

This game was all about getting that win, we took the lead through a fortunate own goal. Slick passing followed by a cross by Segura, that cross was just across the six yard box, a dangerous area, but no DC players are nearby, in fact the closest was Rooney and he was by the edge of the box, Tuiloma slides in and taps it in for us. Great finish. There was a little bit of controversy in this game, which seems to be the going thing for any MLS game right now. Corner came in and Steve Clark, in no man’s land, ends up ricocheting off him and Williamson clears it. At 1st glance, I was cheering, and then the replays came on, and it just went over the line.

Make your own mind up on that, but it just goes to show that VAR should have been used here, it wasn’t, and something needs to be done over the close season to not only train the refs, but actually get those who are looking at these camera angles to actually get the refs to look at them too. To add to that, maybe some investment into Hawkeye technology for this, that takes seconds and isn’t reliant on an interpretation.

The 2nd half of the game was one way traffic really, all Portland and at one point, they had 80% of the possession for that half. Many shots raining down as much as the weather at the DC goal, but only 4 of the 20-odd attempts hit the target, that’s as many as DC had, but we had only 6 attempts on goal. Portland’s struggles were getting to challenge Hamid. So many times DC have been in this position, taking a slender lead, defending deep in the 2nd half, but, we’ve won 11 of 11 games doing that now. Can’t say we aren’t good at protecting a lead.

Arriola had a great chance to give us a 2 goal cushion after being played through on goal by Segura, but a top notch save from Clark onto the post denied Arriola his 6th of the season. Acosta came on later and him, Arriola and Amarikwa all teamed up to play keep ball in the corner and wound down a couple of minutes of added time, great game management. Portland never found a way through and it finished 1-0 to DC.

Match Facts

  • Wayne Rooney returned to the starting XI for the first time since August 21 against the New York Red Bulls.
  • Bill Hamid recorded his 11th shutout of the season; a career season-high.

Man of the Match

The official man of the match was Segura, he had a decent game, but not the best in my eyes, for me, it was the heart of the defence, the man who I called all game, Brick Wall Brillant. He was not allowing anything passed him, and picked up a hand injury towards the end of the game, but came back on to see the match out.
